I lead a lifestyle where I live to eat and tend to eat food to enjoy it, rather than for keeping me satiated and that will obviously lead to excess intake of food that in normal circumstances will deposit as fats. Thankfully, my other passion is yoga (just did a good 5 classes yesterday!) and the effects of yoga can counter the side effects (aka fattening effect) of eating too much. Read my other blog to know how much yoga is required for weight loss effect.
Anyway, it may be true that exercise or a good diet can help a person slim down by burning fat or toning up your shape, but one area that cannot be solved by eating less or exercising more is cellulite and stretch marks!
These 2 are problems majority of women face and from my experience, I have lost inches off my thighs from a healthy lifestyle of yoga and healthier food (I mean sometimes. I still enjoy my food as you can see from this blog.) but cellulite and stretch marks remains.
So what causes cellulite? Cellulite is NOT fat.
From Wikipedia: Cellulite is the herniation of subcutaneous fat within fibrous connective tissue that manifests topographically as skin dimpling and nodularity, often on the pelvic region (specifically the buttocks), lower limbs, and abdomen. Cellulite occurs in most postpubescent females. A review gives a prevalence of 85%-98% of women, indicating that it is physiologic rather than pathologic. It can result from a complex combination of factors ranging from hormones to heredity.
For pictures of cellulite you can refer to Wikipedia. I shall not post gross photos on my blog. Cellulite can occur even on skinny people!
So who tends to get cellulite?
It an unfortunate fact that cellulite affects so many (85%-98%!!) women but it doesn’t really affect men simply because women tend to carry more fat around their hips and thighs and we also have less supportive connective tissue to keep it all in place.
Cellulite also tends to get worse with age because bodies our produce less estrogen, a hormone that helps keep blood vessels flowing smoothly. Less estrogen can mean poorer circulation, which can also mean a decrease in new collagen production and the breakdown of older connective tissue. You may not suffer from it in the past but if you suddenly develop cellulite one day, don’t freak out and think you’re getting fat. It’s just your hormones.
Another sad cause is genetics – something you may be just born with being prone to cellulite. Too bad.
Cellulite is something you can’t unsee once you’ve seen it. It’s so ugly there’s no denying (I’m not body shaming here. It’s like saying acne is ugly because it really is and that’s not a matter of preference). A person in perfect shape with nice toned legs could have it all ruined with the cellulite dimples at the back of her thighs. Well most of the time our clothing will cover such area, but when you’re wearing swimwear or shorts it is absolutely visible. And since even skinny people can suffer from this, it is definitely not due being fat (it’s a myth!) or anything so diet or exercising will not solve this problem. (And of course, those topical skin firming creams will not work.)
Cellulite isn’t as commonly targeted for criticism as compared like, to being fat or flabby (skinny fat) because it can be easily covered up by clothes while the latter fault can still be visible through clothes. Most of the time people wear clothes (stating the obvious…) so we won’t really know who has dimpled back thighs. If you’ve successfully lost inches from diet or some slimming programme, I’m sure you’ll want to perfect it up by not having appearance of cellulite and flaunt your legs.
In any case, cellulite is no way desirable and the only proven way to get rid of it is through aesthetic treatments. Sure you can try prevent it with a super toxic-free lifestyle so it doesn’t build up (no guarantee though, because this remains a myth) but once it’s there, it’s comforting to know that non-invasive machines can aid in smoothing out the layer!
Fact: Laser, radio-frequency, and massage techniques have been used for several years to reduce the appearance of cellulite—and while their results are not permanent, they are effective in the short-term, says Dr. Karcher. “These are going to work better than some drug-store cream, and they can be worth it if you have the time and the money to spend on them.” Some (like TriActiv and VelaSmooth laser treatments) require 10 to 15 sessions to significantly improve appearance, and require monthly maintenance appointments. Thanks to the Sample Store, I recently tried the Cellulite Buster treatment at ClearSK which uses VelaShape™ machine.
It combines up to 3 different technologies – RF, rolling motion vacuum and Infra ray to promote drainage of toxins and stimulate collagen remodelling to improve appearance of the skin. It activates lymphatic drainage, improve blood circulation and reduce water retention and it claims to gradually smoothen and tone skin with a noticeable reduction in cellulite.
I tried this procedure for my thighs which sadly, have appearance of cellulite. So I just laid face down and the treatment commenced with application of a special cream made for this treatment. The applicator was applied all over my thighs, going over the same spots a few times. The applicator was slightly warm and the suction was quite hard, but within comfortable range. In fact, I liked the feeling of it and it was kind of relaxing. I just had to lay there while the therapist carried out the treatment.
So I went for 2 sessions in total and I do not have any pictures showing differences because it’s too little for any big change. I can report that the treatment was comfortable at least.
While there is no way to permanently solve cellulite, it’s good to know that treatments like Velashape™ can help for now and in the meantime, you got to aim at keeping your connective tissues strong. Avoid all things that could further weaken it like smoking or anything that reduces collagen levels.
If you would like to try out Velashape™ Cellulite Buster, you can have it done at ClearSK at $98 for 45mins.
