Shanghai – Mr & Mrs Bund

I made this trip to Shanghai on rather short notice, hence I could not make reservations for Ultraviolet (#3 for Asia’s Top 50). However, it wasn’t hard to secure a table at Mr & Mrs Bund (#21) with a window seat facing the bund. This restaurant by Paul Pairet serves mainly French like dishes and is quite popular. To avoid surcharges, I booked my dinner on 23rd December, the day I arrived in Shanghai. I was really looking forward to this meal because I’m not a fan of Chinese food.

Tuna mousse was provided with crispy bread to start.

Their bread was so good, especially the one which looks like grilled steak. I probably got full eating this! The tuna spread was so good and it was complimentary.

Loving my fuzzy animal print sweater!

The restaurant was decorated for Christmas. In this city (and the whole of China), Christmas isn’t a public holiday for obvious reasons so you won’t feel any festive vibe walking around the city. You only get a bit of feel when certain malls or restaurants put up Christmas decor.

Seared Foie Gras Pomelo – RMB180

Seared Foie Gras, Lime Glaze, Pomelo

Nothing fanciful but perfectly done.

Foie Gras Light Crumble – 80RMB

Light Duck Foie Gras Mousse, Raisin Hazelnut Crumble

Served with that same bread which looks like steak. This alone is already very filling and it tastes great.

Conchiglie & Ceps – 130RMB

Foie Gras Sauce, Seared Cep Mushrooms and Gruyère

I over ordered not expecting big portions. I liked the ceps.

Boeuf Bourguignon – 170RMB

Beef Cheeks & Tendons Braised in Red Wine, Garlic, Onion, Carrot and Leek.

This one was not so outstanding, considering a random shop in Burgundy served it better.

“Black Cod In The Bag” – 280RMB

Black Cod Fish in Heatproof Bag Simmered with Cantonese Sauce

This one is obviously not French style and since this is China, expect some Chinese twist to the food.

This was labelled as a most popular item on the menu but perhaps the popularity is relative to Chinese diners. I would recommend getting the French dishes instead like the foie gras!
