I’ve heard about this restaurant for sometime but have yet to try it out, until Restaurant Week 2011.
I’m a BIG fan of beef steak and I’ve heard so much about the steaks from The Tavern. I seized the chance to reserve a table for 2 during Restaurant Week!
They offered a 3 course set dinner for $55++/pax.
THE TAVERN RESTAURANT was opened in July 1994. Started by Mr Poh Say Eng, a well-known restaurant Maitre ‘d, The Tavern offers Swiss & Continental Cuisine in an intimate and relaxed Swiss Chalet-inspired corner shop-house at River Valley Road near the Mohamed Sultan Road junction.
Some of the restaurant’s signature dishes are; Raclette Cheese served with air-dried beef, Pan-fried Fresh Goose Liver, Australian Grain-fed Rib-Eye Steak, Slice Veal Zurich Style served with Roesti potato. The ever-popular classical dessert Crepe Suzette is prepared by the tableside and flamed with brandy right before the customers.– from their website
The restaurant’s interior was very small and cozy but sometimes you can’t judge the quality of the restaurant based on it’s size, even though it did affect my initial impression.
The bread was served with some pesto and a whole chunk of butter, which we obviously did not finish. There’s nothing special about the bread.
Caesar Salad with Smoked Chicken
Not so impressive
Scallop Chowder
This was delicious! They had 2 whole scallops in there. yummy!!! Loving that bowl and plate too.
Sorbet to cleanse the palate
Grilled Prime U.S.Rib-Eye Steak
Now the pictures may not look impressive but this was one hell of the best steak I’ve tried! Save for wagyu and the fancy cows, but comparing to other normal beef this was was so juicy, well marinated, and the chewiness was just nice! But the size was pathetic. It looks like, 150g? we sure want more.
It was cooked to perfection. I totally abhor unevenly cooked steak. Mine was medium rare. The fats melted in my mouth instantaneously.
Coupe Nesselrode
This is chestnut puree made into noodle shape, with ice cream on top
Tiramisu
This wasn’t the best tiramisu but was good enough. I would prefer the cream to be less firm.
Coffee and tea as usual. I ordered Earl Grey, as usual.
For $55++, it isn’t the most value for money set meals around, but given how well cooked the steak was, I would say it’s all worth it!
I would definitely be back for the steak again. I’m also interested to try out their foie gras, lobster bisque, lobster and Hokkaido scallops.
