Dulcet & Studio – Cakes

This café is relatively new in Liang Court but isn’t exactly new as some of the items used to be available at Tampopo Deli. The café serve savoury meals as well as a selection of cakes and other desserts like puddings, displayed at the counter in front.

Many of the cakes were chiffon cakes, and we were spoilt for choice. There was Strawberry Short Cake, Rose Chiffon Cake, Rose Marbled Chiffon Cake, Chocolate Chiffon Cake, Maple Chiffon Cake, Mont Blanc, Kokuma Cake (Sweet Potato), Matcha Chiffon Cake, Signature Scoop Cake and probably some others which I do not remember.

Matcha Chiffon Cake – $6.00

This is essentially strawberry shortcake with matcha chiffon instead of vanilla genoise sponge. The cream and strawberry components are exactly the same as strawberry shortcakes.

The cream was one of the best fresh creams I’ve ever had in cakes so far and the strawberry was fresh enough too. The matcha cake was airy and soft as expected from a chiffon cake and the matcha flavour was fine. I would love to try the original strawberry shortcake next time, since I enjoyed the cream so much.

Signature Scoop Cake – $6.00

This cake is somewhat like the typical strawberry shortcake, except that they use other fruits in the filling and garnishing. The cake is also softer than the normal genoise, hence it can be scooped with eased. The cream, is very fresh and well whipped and that is probably what makes this cake so delicious. The sponge was soft and airy too, moister than the chiffon cake. I can understand why this is the signature cake because it was really delicious! It wasn’t too sweet overall too, which was very good. The after taste is not too rich and you won’t get sick of it after just a few mouths. I guess the light taste is typical of most Japanese cakes and pastries and I really like that.

Dulcet & Studio produces better cakes than the slew of new pretentious cafes serving mediocre cakes, like the one just across the road. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy some Japanese inspired cakes do try this café!

However, I wonder what they do with their leftover cakes. They do not have a clearance sale policy of half price cakes after a specific time, unlike most other bakeries. Do they sell stale cakes the next day? I wonder..

Ambiance: 7/10

Food: 8/10

Value: 7.5/10

Overall: great place for Japanese cakes! However, variety isn’t great as most items are chiffon cakes
