It was New Year’s Eve and to look for a nice restaurant that isn’t making use of the ocassion to serve fixed set menus with overwhelming prices and underwhleming standards AND isn’t already fully booked is no easy feat. After calling multiple establishments I ended up successfully making a reservation at Casa Tartufo. I had been wanting to try their steak for some time and this was the perfect time. What better way to end the year than to have a feast you tell me?
FIORENTINA – $170.00++
1Kg of char-grilled T-bone Steak with fried Garlic and Sage
Despite not going through the rest of the menu, I already knew what to order, since this was our objective for coming here.
Casa Tartufo is actually an Italian restaurant specialising in truffles but I’ve heard raves about their Fiorentina steak for being the best steak around.
Indeed, this steak did not disappoint at all. The T-bone (or Porterhouse) cut has good balance of lean and fatty parts and it was fresh, juicy and oily enough for my liking (hey, New Year’s Eve is only once a year!).
The cooking was well executed and the medium rare doneness was evenly nailed. The flavours were consistent throughout and it was basically faultless. In my opinion it is indeed one of the better steaks I’ve had in Singapore.
This portion of steak with a side of Truffle Fries ($13.00++) was just enough for 2, leaving us feeling more than satiated – very full in fact, when leaving the restaurant. I had no space for any wine. With wine, this serving would be just right for 3.
Speaking of truffle fries, it was the best truffle fries I ever had. The fries were probably double or triple fried because it the texture was still good even when no longer piping hot, and the truffle flavour was well balance. This restaurant lives up to its reputation for specializing in truffles.
The restaurant ambiance was cosy and homely, yet slightly romantic as it was dim and had the feel of the 90s – somewhat like the ambiance at The Tavern. This is a good place to be on a date where you prefer a homely romantic ambiance rather a posh and formal one.
