Mid Autumn Festival is probably my favourite Chinese festival because of mooncake! Mooncake is only available during this time of the year, like how log cakes are only available during Christmas. I am not a fan of most Chinese pastries but mooncake is just different. I love them all – baked and snowskin. I like all sorts of flavours, be it lotus, yam or custard. All nutritional advice goes into the bin during this time of the year because if you don’t savour it now, you got to wait a while year before these becomes available again.
The last time I posted about mooncake was 2011 so I thought I’d post about my current favourites.
Raffles Champagne Truffle and Ganache Snow-Skin Mooncake ($72).
This probably doesn’t need much introduction because it’s a household name. I’ve been having this for countless years, and even though it seemed better in the past somehow, it’s still a league ahead of all other competitor snow-skin mooncakes. Really, no competition. This particular flavour is their best seller .
They also have an assortment of other flavours which varies every year. The new creation this year is the the Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Feuilletine.
Top L-R: Dark Chocolate Crunchy Pearl, Raffles Cognac Truffle
Bottom L-R: Earl Grey Tea and Chocolate Pearl Truffle, Champagne Truffle and Ganache, Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Feuilletine
I love variety so I can’t decide which is better. I am a fan of earl grey in general, so of course I loved their earl grey mooncake, but the others were pretty good too.
The new peanut butter flavour had a nice crunchy texture thanks to the feuilletine but the peanut butter flavour kind of didn’t fit in too well.
When in doubt, just get the champagne truffle because I can’t seem to get sick of it despite having it repeatedly.
