Standing Sushi Bar (8QSAM) – Dinner

I was looking for a cheap and good, but non chain restaurant place for a Japanese cuisine dinner and I settled for Standing Sushi Bar (SSB). There’re two outlets but the outlet at Queen Street was more convenient for us.

The price range is around the same as that from Sushi Tei, which is quite bench mark. Note that at SSB, they only charge service charge and do not charge GST.

Aburi Shake Sushi – $6.00+

I prefer partly seared fish over totally raw fish on nigiri sushi! This didn’t fall short from my expectations.

We all ordered from the set menu, which comes with salad.

The salad was with vinaigrette dressing which was light and refreshing. The portion of the salad was quite substantial and made a good appetiser.

Gindara Teriyaki Bento Set – $25.00++

It comes with miso soup and 2 slices of watermelon.

The cod was soft and juicy, which was good. there’s an option of either agedashi tofu or saba, and I chose the former. The tofu was quite bench mark, nothing to complain about. The sashimi however, could have been fresher. In particular, the maguro didn’t quite make it.

Sukiyaki – $18.00++

Tori Teriyaki Bento Set – $18.00++

Overall, the food at SSB was decent. It didn’t fall short of my expectations (which was just bench mark, I wasn’t expecting more) and quite a good place for a quiet meal without emptying the wallet. I wished that the sashimi was better though. It felt as if they gave us inferior ones to clear old stock or something. I wouldn’t mind trying the other outlet next time. The prices there seem cheaper too.

Overall: this restaurant is for bench mark Japanese food. A good choice if you’re tired of Sushi Tei.
