I am not into the cafe wave but this place is located near my neighbourhood and it serves cakes & waffles so why not? Maple & Market is not really a cafe anyway. Even though it does have a hipster vibe to it akin to hipster cafes, it is more like a cake shop which happens to sell coffee and tea as well.
I am always excited when there are promising establishments nearby because who doesn’t love convenience.
The cakes here are traditional cakes and not French-Japanese style which I personally prefer. However, if it’s done properly there’s no harm trying. Some classic cakes are always good like red velvet and carrot cake.
Root Beer Cake
The cake itself was very soft because root beer was used (imagine all the gas) but other than that I don’t recall anything special in particular. Not really my kind.
Toffee Cake
I preferred this one over the root beer cake and I liked the granola like topping more than the cake itself.
Actually, I wished I had ordered the rose, red velvet or carrot cake instead. The cake I wanted to try most – gula meleka, was out of stock that day.
Waffles with caramelized bananas and walnuts – $9.00
Waffles with maple syrup cost $4 so essentially the bananas cost $5. However, that’s the usual price of waffles at hipster cafes so I guess $9 is still alright. The waffles were more outstanding than the cakes in comparison and it was light and fluffy. A pretty decent waffle, even though I won’t say it’s the best. The bananas were almost as good as the famous goreng pisang at Old Airport Road Food Center just across the road. Overall it was quite satisfying.
I understand that this is more of a take away place and their business is not all about dine in customers but I would really like this place more if it had more space and used better lighting. Certain areas were quite hot due to the spot lights.
